Wreck Diving!

SCUBA diving on wrecks, or “wreck diving”, is a popular activity for SCUBA divers. Shipwrecks are interesting dive sites because submerged structures create artificial reef, which becomes a home for many types of marine life.  Wreck diving is found all over the world, either from the tragic sinking of a ship or wrecks that were sunk intentionally in order to create an artificial reef.

Professional SCUBA diver education organizations, (PADI, SSI, ie.) offer specific courses that teach how to be a safe and confident “Wreck diver”.

Wreck diving offers SCUBA divers many exciting aspects including:  A variety of marine life, historically interesting vessels, photographic opportunities, archaeological research as well as a feeling of discovery and exploration.

Although most dive-able wrecks are hard to reach and the depth can pose a challenge to many SCUBA divers, there are some easily accessible wrecks available closer to shore.  The Wreck of the Prince Albert at Roatan Island is available as a shore dive or drop-off dive.  Wreck divers love exploring the 140 foot tanker, the Prince Albert, which was deliberately sunk in 1985, providing guests at the adjacent dedicated dive Resort ample opportunity for exploration, photography and wreck diving practice.
